TS Bank celebrates fifth annual Christmas at Children's Square
December 20, 2016 | TS Bank
Council Bluffs, IA - For the past five years, TS Bank employees have incorporated a special tradition into their celebration of the holiday season.
During the month of December, TS Bank hosts a Christmas celebration at Children’s Square in Council Bluffs. Children’s Square is a home and place of refuge for children ages 1 -17 with emotional disorders or those who are in need of out-of-home placement.
This celebration includes a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus (TS Banking Group's own Mick Guttau and Judy Guttau). The children residing at Children’s Square have the opportunity to sit on Santa’s lap, and – with the help of a few elves – receive an individual gift, as a well as a bag of goodies, gloves and a pack of cards.
The Children’s Square event began five years ago and hits close to the heart for TS Bank– as CEO Joshua M. Guttau and his wife, Shelly Guttau decided to adopt a child they connected with through Children’s Square.
Through their experience, Joshua and Shelly Guttau realized that the holidays can be a very unsettling time for children to be away from their families. They wanted to share this touching experience with others and it eventually led to bank employees volunteering time and gifts to encourage the children and staff on site at Children's Square.
Unlike other community reinvestment initiatives of the company, the Children's Square project is special. The cost of this event is completely covered by donations and gifts from employees.
TS Bank employees volunteer and purchase a gift for individuals currently residing at Children's Square. This year there were over 50 individual gifts donated. Employees also donated board games and movies that stay in the cottages on the Children’s Square campus. There are four cottages and an emergency shelter housing children.
“The joy of giving truly is a special thing,” said Sheila Lewis, core systems manager at TS Bank. "I will never forget how the boys and girls faces light up after receiving a gift."
