Personal & Professional Background

What inspired you to pursue a career in banking?

My inspiration to pursue a career in banking and lending stems from a deep-seated interest in financial systems and a desire to help individuals and businesses achieve their financial goals. Growing up, I was fascinated by how financial institutions operate and the pivotal role they play in economic development. This curiosity, combined with a strong commitment to community service, led me to a career where I can make a tangible impact on people's lives through financial guidance and support.

What’s the most memorable client interaction you’ve ever had?

One of the most memorable client interactions I had was with a small business owner who was struggling to secure a loan to start their business. After understanding their unique challenges and financial situation, I was able to tailor a lending solution that not only met their needs but also provided them with the financial stability to grow their business. Seeing their business thrive and knowing that I played a part in their success was incredibly rewarding and reaffirmed my passion for helping clients achieve their financial goals.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone applying for a loan, what would it be?

One piece of advice for someone applying for a loan is to thoroughly understand their financial situation and needs before approaching a lender. This means having a clear picture of their income, expenses, credit history, and the specific purpose of the loan. Being well-prepared with this information can help them present a strong case to the lender and increase their chances of securing the loan.

What’s a common myth about banking or lending that you’d like to debunk?

A common myth about banking and lending is that banks only lend money to people who don't need it. In reality, banks assess loan applications based on various factors such as creditworthiness, income, and the ability to repay the loan. They aim to support individuals and businesses in achieving their financial goals, regardless of their current financial status.

What skills or qualities do you think make someone successful in your role?

To be successful in ag and commercial lending, one needs a combination of strong analytical skills, excellent communication abilities, and a deep understanding of the agricultural and commercial sectors. Understanding both ag and commercial sectors at a very low and high level gives you perspective of the challenges your clients face.

Beyond Banking

If you weren’t in banking, what would your dream job be?

Working for a non-profit organization focused on economic development, where I can contribute to initiatives that support small businesses and promote financial literacy.

What’s the most surprising thing about your job that people wouldn’t expect?

One of the most surprising things about being an ag lender that people might not expect is the deep connection and understanding you develop with the agricultural community. It's not just about numbers and financial statements; it's about building relationships and truly understanding the unique challenges and opportunities that farmers and agricultural businesses face. This role requires a blend of financial expertise and a genuine interest in the agricultural sector, which can be both rewarding and eye-opening.

What is one thing you never leave the house without and why?

One thing I should never leave the house without is my cell phone. In today's world, a phone is not just a communication device; it's a tool that can help you navigate, stay connected, manage your schedule, and access important information on the go. We all would like to leave our phones at home from time to time but they are a vital key to our success each and every day.

What does a typical Sunday afternoon look like for you?

Sunday afternoons are my time to either get in a round of golf or tackle outdoor projects around the house. I usually have a few projects in progress or seasonal tasks that I keep on a set schedule throughout the year.

What’s one thing in your office that always sparks a conversation with clients or coworkers?

I have a model of the “Wall Street Bull” on the corner of my desk that always sparks conversations. The Wall Street Bull is in Manhattan and is an iconic sculpture destination for those visiting New York City. It is a symbol of financial optimism, prosperity, and the entrepreneurial spirit. It is the perfect piece for my desk that my daughter bought for me on a trip to New York City.

Personal Interests & Hobbies

Current boards or volunteering you do and why you choose to get involved with those organizations?

I am currently involved on seven different boards and committees along with an additional three revolving loan fund committees. I am involved in community boards and committees because of my strong commitment to community service and my desire to make a tangible impact on people's lives. Being part of these boards and committees allows me to contribute to initiatives that support small businesses, promote financial literacy and foster economic development. My involvement also reflects my dedication to building relationships and understanding the unique challenges and opportunities within my community.

What’s a dream destination you’d love to travel to?

I love to travel to any place that has four things: warm weather, sand, water and a golf course. If it has these four things, I am all in!

If you could recommend one book or movie that influenced you, what would it be?

"Rich Dad Poor Dad" is my favorite book because it offers valuable insights into financial literacy and the importance of having a strong financial mindset. The book contrasts the different approaches to money and investing taken by the author's two father figures, providing practical lessons on how to build wealth and achieve financial independence. Its straightforward and relatable storytelling makes complex financial concepts easy to understand and apply in real life.

What’s your favorite local small business to support and why?

The restaurant, Primrose in Corning, Iowa, is one of my favorites and truly embodies the spirit of community and offers unique products. Supporting Primrose not only helps sustain a local business but also contributes to the overall economic development and vibrancy of the Corning community. Primrose provides a welcoming atmosphere and delicious meals that bring people together, making it a favorite spot for both locals and visitors.
