Treynor, IA, March 11, 2022 - After a successful forty-three-year career in community banking, Judith (Judy) Guttau, of TS Bank in Treynor, Iowa, will retire on May 1, 2022.
A Griswold native, Judy attended Griswold High School, then graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics. She married Michael (Mick) Guttau in 1968 and they have lived in Treynor since 1972.
Prior to her 43-year banking career, Judy served as a teacher in Stratford, Iowa and Savanna, Georgia, then in Ankeny, Iowa while Mick was serving as a cobra helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War. Since 1979, Judy served in multiple banking roles, including Secretary of the Board, Director of Marketing, Internal Auditor, Statesman’s Club Coordinator and Director of Community Reinvestment. Additionally, Judy has served on the bank’s Board of Directors since 1980 and will remain in that role after her retirement.
During her tenure, Judy led, planned and hosted over 500 educational, social and public relations events for the Statesman’s Club, bank clients and employees. For over 21 years, she led the 250-member Statesman’s Club trips to places all over the nation where each social event concluded with the song “God Bless America.” She also had the unique opportunity to host over 20 bankers and economists from former Soviet Union countries. Judy also developed and launched TS Promise, which brings positive messages of hope to area youth. For over 20 years, middle and high school students have filed into gymnasiums and auditoriums to hear from speakers who educate, inspire and empower through TS Promise, influencing over 4,000 students in southwest Iowa annually.
Together, Judy and Mick have received several honors including the 2016 State of Iowa Governor’s Volunteer Award, 2008 CHI Health Southwest Iowa Heritage Award, 2018 Assure Honorary Chairs, 2018 Treynor Athletic Booster Bash Honorary Chairs and 2019 American Red Cross Honorary Chairs. Additionally, Judy was one of six women named in The Daily Nonpareil’s top Southwest Iowa Women in 2006.
“As Mick and I grew up, our communities invested in us to help us grow, but it really struck home when our local communities welcomed Mick home with open arms from the Vietnam War, which was unusual in those times. When we had the opportunity to become bankers, we knew right away that we wanted for us personally and our bank to “give back”, to be involved in people’s lives and make our community a special place to live, learn and work,” said Judy Guttau.
Mick and Judy worked side-by-side for years, growing the bank, navigating the 80’s ag crisis and riding all of the community banking waves. The culture they established over 40 years, plus the next generation, has jump-started new opportunities to DO MORE good and IGNITE PROSPERITY®.
When asked about her time at the bank, she has numerous memories including those with many fellow employees.
“We have laughed together, cried together, shared life together, all while helping our clients and our communities thrive. What more could a person want than to have really enjoyed doing the work I did, and the people I worked with and knowing I was helping in a special way.”
Judy has been actively involved in community service throughout her career. She currently serves as a board member with the Treynor Optimists, Good News Jail and Prison Ministry, Four Corners Community Foundation, Council Bluffs Schools Foundation and serves as a Governor on the Iowa State University Foundation. She helped raise funds for the ISU Forever True campaign and currently for the Treynor Athletic Boosters Bash and Hope Net Ministries. She has served as a board member with Child Evangelism Fellowship, Council Bluffs Senior Center, IWCC Arts Center Council and was a dedicated 4-H leader and Sunday school teacher for many years. Both she and Mick have also been active members of Living Hope Community Church near Treynor.
Their two children are now involved in the family business. Daughter Heidi, Baird Holm attorney, joined the board in 2000 and son, Josh (Shelly) became President in 2008 and CEO in 2013. Under the next generation’s leadership, the bank continues to expand while still focused on the bank’s mission.
Judy added, “Being Secretary of the TS Banking Group boards has allowed me to serve alongside shareholders and directors who have been great to work with throughout the years. An added bonus has been working with Mick, Heidi and Josh in this role. I would never have guessed this would happen. Being a wife to Mick, the past CEO and current Chairman of the Board, led me to new adventures I would never dream of. Mick was chairman of so many state and national banking organizations, and he’s a visionary for the bank. Now having our son, Josh be CEO, is a dream I never expected, which has taken us to amazing growth of the organization. Plus, our daughter Heidi has been able to provide her legal expertise into the mix. It has truly been a great career!”
Judy enjoys travel, music, sewing, planning gatherings and spending time with family, especially her seven grandchildren, Shianne (and husband Cole), Joslyn, Dane, Tessa, Brock, Blake and Emmersen, and newest great-grandchild, Finnegan.
Please join us in congratulating Judy Guttau on her retirement with a card shower. Please send your best wishes and salutations to 15 E. Main Street, P.O.
