TS Bank among partners as Corning Hotel moves toward reality

After 10 years of work, the finish line is in sight.

Officials recently in Corning broke ground on the Corning Hotel, celebrating the start of construction of a facility that will help keep visitors in town and continue the economic development of a gem in southwest Iowa.

“I can’t believe it guys, it’s really happening,” Corning Hotel Group President Donna Hogan said during a groundbreaking celebration on Monday afternoon. “We’ve been talking about a hotel in Corning for 10 years now. I could not be more proud of this community and how it always steps up.”

The two-story hotel will feature 33 guest rooms, with two extended-stay rooms with kitchenettes and a double king suite. Amenities will include cable TV, wireless internet, guest laundry and free breakfast.

Forty-six investors put in $3.1 million to help make the dream a reality, according to Hogan. TS Bank chipped in $50,000.

“It’s going to be huge for Corning, a pillar business that can help other businesses,” said Tysen Christensen, vice president of agriculture and business banking at the TS Bank Corning location. “Hopefully it’ll draw people to stop in Corning and see all that we have to offer. It’s going to be really nice.”

Hogan said the city, county and working group looked to the Mount Ayr Inn and Suites in Ringgold County, Iowa, for guidance as they worked to open a private hotel in lieu of working with a chain.

The hotel will be owned by investors in a manager-managed limited liability company, with an oversight board of five members, Hogan said. The hotel will have two full-time and nine part-time employees.

Construction work is set to begin on Aug. 19, with opening targeted for summer of 2020.

The Corning Hotel will be located on Juniper Avenue in Corning, just off U.S. Highway 34, prime real estate to attract both visitors to Corning and passersby on the major southern Iowa highway.

The project was led by the hotel group, the Adams County Economic Development County and Adams County Board of Supervisors.

“We want to make Adams County a place people want to live, work, visit and stay,” Board of Supervisors Chairman Leland Shipley said.

While the smallest county by population in Iowa, Corning and Adams County make a big splash. Not only is it known as an award-winning National Main Street community, it is on the National Register of Historic Places as a Commercial Historic District, is a Preserve America Community and is one of Iowa’s Great Places. The new hotel will open up opportunities for more people to experience what Corning and Adams County have to offer.
