2023 REV Winner: Gillett Hauling - $15,000
Owner: Clayton Gillett
What was the REV experience like for you?
“REV was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had since launching my business. It required a lot of hard work and preparation, especially since it happened during my busiest season. But that challenge forced me to really dive deep into my company’s future direction, making the whole process even more meaningful.”
How did the funding impact your business?
“At first, I wasn’t sure how much $15,000 could change things, but I quickly realized it wasn’t just about the money. It provided the working capital we needed, which allowed me to save for equipment upgrades and better serve our clients. To put it into perspective, I would’ve had to generate $75,000 in revenue to clear $15,000 in profit, so this funding saved me a lot of time and effort.”
What new developments are happening at Gillett Hauling?
“There are a few exciting changes! We’ve leased a facility to maintain our trucks in-house, which has boosted efficiency. We also introduced new company uniforms, adding a professional touch. On top of that, we’ve upgraded to a semi-trailer combination, increasing our capacity to 95,000 lbs, allowing us to take on bigger clients. And perhaps the biggest game-changer was hiring Nikki, our new billing specialist. She’s been an incredible addition to the team.”
How has this year affected your business, and how can others support you?
“This year has been a bit slower, which made me nervous at first. But after reviewing the numbers, I realized our revenue is actually up, thanks in part to the higher-paying jobs we’ve secured since winning REV. The competition really solidified our reputation in the community. Others can support us by continuing to spread the word about our company—it’s been a huge help!”
Anything else you’d like to share?
“I would recommend REV to any startup or small business. It’s the kind of marketing you can’t buy. Standing on stage with my family and that big check was unforgettable. I never thought a small company like mine would win, but it reminded me that every business, no matter how small, contributes to a thriving community.”
2023 REV Winner OCookieOs - $15,000
Owners: Nichole Bartlett and Vincent Rissell
What was the REV experience like for you?
“The experience was a whirlwind! It forced us to look inward at our business and really evaluate our path forward,” says Nichole.
“As an introvert, I didn’t sleep the night before, but it was so worth it. Presenting was nerve-wracking, but it pushed us to take bold steps,” adds Vincent.
How did the funding help your business?
“As runners-up, we received $5,000, which came at the perfect time. One of our delivery vehicles broke down shortly after REV, so part of the prize went toward repairs. The rest gave us some working capital to make it through the holiday season and save for a new delivery vehicle, which we just purchased this year. REV helped us continue growing even through challenges,” shares Nichole.
What’s new at OCookieOs?
“We just wrapped up our Farmer’s Market season and are now focusing on Doordash for Monday-Thursday deliveries with free delivery on Fridays! We’re also working toward our FDA license, which is an exciting step for us as we plan for 2025,” says Vincent.
How has this year impacted your business, and how can others help?
“Ingredient prices have skyrocketed—our chocolate alone has increased by 30% due to a cocoa butter shortage. Eggs, butter, and other staples are also more expensive. The best way to support us is to keep buying local when possible and being understanding of the challenges small businesses are facing,” explains Nichole.
Anything else you’d like to share?
“We are so grateful for REV. It’s been an amazing spotlight on the hard work local businesses put into making this community better. We’re excited for what’s ahead!” say Nichole and Vincent.
